Ingredients

6 servings
  • 1 lb elbow macaroni
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cup whole milk (warmed)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cup sharp cheddar (shredded)
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese (shredded)
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs

How to Make It

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 375°F. Cook macaroni 2 minutes less than package directions. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook 1-2 minutes until golden.

  3. 3

Gradually whisk in warm milk and cream. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 5 minutes.

  4. 4

Remove from heat and stir in cheddar, Gruyère, mustard, salt, and cayenne until smooth.

  5. 5

Combine sauce with macaroni and pour into a greased 9x13 baking dish. Top with panko.

  6. 6

Bake 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden. Rest 5 minutes before serving.
